Tell a story
The best displays tell a story. Picture globes hanging from the ceiling, an old fashioned suitcase filled with merchandise, and a throwback camera. You think of summer travels in the best possible way, with a touch of nostalgia thrown in. A sign in the back of the shop can echo the overall message.
Use the floating space
Using the “floating space” above a display is perfect for a smaller window. It is whimsical and eye-catching. Bright colors are cheerful, and kites are a fun and unexpected touch. Always keep the empty space above a display in mind when planning. Hang items such as large paper flowers, beach balls, origami birds… the options are endless.

Consider every angle
When creating a new display or merchandising a new collection, consider every angle. Is the display centered allowing customers to walk around all sides or is it against a wall? What are the traffic patterns in your gift shop and the customer’s perspective from every approach to your display. Don’t be afraid of height! Items displayed at various heights are much more eye catching than items lined on a shelf.
Keep it cohesive
No matter what type of merchandise you are displaying, it’s advantageous to feature a variety of goods that complement each other. Stick with a specific color story or highlight a collection of items that can be used together. Cohesive displays help motivate customers to consider multiple items for purchase.
Freshen it as it sells
A simple display can work on many levels. As items from your display sell down, be sure to freshen it up. Keeping displays well merchandised, clean, neat and organized will continue to attract customers. Simplicity can be the best tool – since it communicates its own message and will appeal to customers, who prefer clean lines.
